CalTeach is a program for undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors interested in exploring a career in education. Through CalTeach courses, students learn conceptual teaching skills and practice these methods in local K-12 classrooms. CalTeach offers unique opportunities for students to complete both a bachelor’s degree and a California Teaching Credential as an undergraduate.

UC Berkeley

  • CalTeach Minor (Science and Math Education Minor)

    • ​The CalTeach Minor consists of six courses which explore different aspects of science and mathematics education with an emphasis on secondary-level curricula. While the courses focus on math and science education, any Berkeley undergraduate is eligible to declare and complete the minor.
      The minor program explores teaching techniques, education research, student cognition, and current issues in public education, including a hands-on field placement component. It also prepares undergraduates for the CalTeach Credential Program, a singular opportunity to simultaneously earn a bachelor’s degree and a California math or science teaching credential.

  • Credential Program

    • Undergraduates who have completed the CalTeach minor and have declared a major in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field are eligible to apply for the credential program, which supports them to get a math or science secondary school teaching credential and begin teaching middle or high school after graduating. Students admitted to the credential program engage in student teaching and enroll concurrently in the final CalTeach course, EDSTEM 303: Apprentice Teaching.
      The CalTeach Credential Program is unusual in the state of California in that it grants credentials concurrent with undergraduate education. This allows aspiring teachers to enter the classroom sooner, and with less expense, than they would have with a typical post-baccalaureate credential.​

Mathematics for Teaching Major

  • The Math for Teaching Major is designed for students who have a substantial interest in teaching mathematics at the secondary level.

  • Science Education Minor

    • The curriculum of the Science Education minor will provide students with the science courses necessary for preparation for the state subject matter exams, two quarters of UCLA-based laboratory teaching practicums taught by experts in laboratory instruction in the disciplines, and will offer the flexibility in education courses to allow individualization of the minor to fit the graduate credential program of their choice. The minor is designed to provide both theory and hands-on experiences. Students interested in K-12 education, as well as graduate programs in their STEM disciplines, are the primary focus.

  • Mathematics for Teaching Minor

    • The Mathematics for Teaching Minor is designed for students majoring in fields other than mathematics who plan to teach secondary mathematics after graduation. For non-majors joining the Mathematics Department and School of Education's Joint Mathematics Education Program (JMEP), the minor provides recognition for completion of prerequisite coursework for the program. This coursework also prepares students for content on the Math CSET exam.

  • Science Teacher Education Program - STEP

    • The goal of Science Teacher Education Program (STEP) is to accelerate the timeline for highly qualified UCLA undergraduate science majors to become secondary-level science teachers in public urban schools. At the conclusion of the STEP Program, students will receive both their preliminary Teaching Credential and Masters in Education. The program begins in the senior year of undergraduate study, includes the summer after graduation, plus one year of graduate enrollment while teaching at a local public school.

  • Joint Mathematics Education Program - JMEP

    • The Joint Math/Ed Program (JMEP) is a collaborative effort of the UCLA Mathematics Department and the Graduate School of Education's Teacher Education Program. In this program, students begin work toward a California Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential in Mathematics during their senior year, and complete this coursework by the end of the academic year immediately following completion of their bachelor's degree. In the academic year immediately following their bachelors degree, students complete a Masters in Education while teaching full time (earning a full time salary) in Los Angeles urban schools.

UC San Diego

Mathematics Secondary Education Major

  • This major offers excellent preparation for teaching mathematics in secondary schools. Students interested in earning a California teaching credential from UC San Diego should contact the Education Studies Program (EDS) for information regarding prerequisites and requirements. It is recommended you contact EDS as early as possible.​

  • Chemical Education Major

    • The Chemical Education major offers an excellent preparation for teaching physical science in secondary schools, including chemistry, physics, earth science, biology, and mathematics. This program is also excellent preparation for students interested in a career in science writing.

  • General Physics/ Secondary Education Major

    • The general physics/secondary education major prepares students to teach physics and physical science in secondary schools. It covers essential topics in physics while providing breadth in chemistry and earth science. The major also includes three quarters of field experience in local schools, where you will work closely with a mentor teacher and high school students.​

    • Courses in the Mathematics Education Minor are intended for students interested in understanding how people learn mathematics, including students interested in teaching and a plethora of other careers that involve communicating mathematical ideas to others, as well as students who are curious about how they can become better learners.

    • Courses in the Science Education Minor are intended for students interested in understanding how people learn science, including students interested in teaching and a plethora of other careers that involve communicating scientific ideas to others, as well as students who are curious about how they can become better learners.

UC Santa Barbara

  • Science and Mathematics Education Minor

    • At the undergraduate level, CalTeach combines quality courses and classroom experiences to prepare students to enter a teacher education program, such as the UCSB Gevirtz School’s Teacher Education Program. Many students taking CalTeach courses opt to fulfill the Science and Mathematics Education Minor, which has two tracks. One track is for prospective elementary teachers and the second is for prospective secondary teachers.

  • Teacher Education Program

    • The Teacher Education Program (TEP) is a 12-month, post-baccalaureate program. We work with one cohort of students per year, with all students beginning in June and completing the program the following June. UCSB candidates will earn a California teaching credential and have the option to concurrently earn a Master’s degree (M.Ed.) in one year.

  • Teaching Credential Program

    • Through the Teacher Education Program offered at UCR's Graduate School of Education, teacher candidates will experience a quality program that immerses them with classroom experiences. Teacher candidates from this esteemed program develop close working relationships and professional network systems with each other because they begin and complete the program with the same student cohort and student teaching supervisor.

    • In this minor, we provide students with an opportunity to examine a comprehensive range of factors that constitute the overall ecology of student development. The Education undergraduate minor allows you to take a variety of courses that equip you with the ability to share information with others and enhances your abilities to work effectively with diverse populations in school and community contexts. Math Education Major

  • The Mathematics Education Bachelor’s of Arts (B.A.) is specially designed for preparing students for a career in K-12 mathematics education. It shares a rigorous approach to advanced mathematics, but requires coursework that is particularly relevant to the K-12 classroom: number theory, classical geometry, and the history of mathematics. In addition, the math education major requires experience in supervised teaching. Many math education majors also participate in CalTeach, to enhance their experience and directly connect with local schools.

  • Science Education Major

    • The science education major provides a broad introduction to the major fields of science, specialized coursework in two selected fields, and educational theory and practical work designed for future science teachers. The program is designed to prepare outstanding candidates to enter teaching credential programs after completion. Students earn a bachelor of science (B.S.) degree. They do not earn a teaching credential; this must be completed later.
